At Tarmac Building Products we’re committed to offering products that help our customers meet their needs for sustainable construction and fulfil their obligations to source responsibly. The range we offer makes it easier to meet, and in many cases surpass, Buildings Regulations and environmental design standards, such as BREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Sustainability is important to us as a business too. We recognise that, though the products we produce contribute to serving our collective economic and social needs for infrastructure, schools, hospitals and homes, it’s still important to minimise the impact their production has on people and the environment.

We’ve been developing and delivering sustainable products throughout our company’s 100 year history. Our work towards sustainability has always considered that our products need to remain cost effective, practical building options in order to meet the needs of both our customers and our business. Today we take a ‘whole life’ view, which approaches the creation of both sustainable products and services from three key standpoints:

Responsible sourcing

We manage the environmental, social and economic impacts of our business and supply chain in a responsible way. This includes our operations; the way we produce materials; health and safety; the way we treat and train our people; and how we transport products to customers.

Tarmac is accredited by two major independent responsible sourcing certification schemes in the UK:

Product quality management

We aim to deliver quality products by operating high standards throughout our business, by understanding our customers' needs and by using best practice in quality management systems. We also comply with BS EN ISO 9001 Quality Systems.

Sustainable product performance

As part of our ‘whole life’ approach we look at every detail of what we do, from initial sourcing of materials, through manufacture, delivery, installation, in-use performance and recyclability at end of use. When considering product performance and development we focus on a range of factors, from reducing carbon footprint, both during the manufacture of products and within buildings in use, to minimising waste and optimising the use of recycled materials. We also provide customers with information, advice and expertise to help them select products that will improve their own sustainability performance, whilst offering excellent quality.

All our work towards sustainability is in addition to meeting essential requirements such as safety, durability and robustness, fire resistance and acoustic performance, plus structural stability
