Climate change

Climate change is one of the most pressing issue society faces today. we are proactively responding to the challenges of climate change in a number of ways. We are managing our own carbon footprint, developing lower carbon, energy-efficient solutions and sustainable products, and helping our customers, suppliers and employees do the same.

So why does climate change matter to us?

Many scientists predict that it will result in more extreme weather conditions, higher global temperatures, increased risk of flooding, heat waves and rising sea levels. All of these outcomes could not only have potentially significant environmental impacts, but could also have huge implications for society, the global economy, and the way we run our business.

What are we doing to deal with climate change?

Our climate change strategy takes a comprehensive approach to energy management and carbon footprint reduction.

Within our own operations, we have set long-term targets to reduce our energy and carbon emissions and explore renewable sources of energy. Currently these are set at achieving 15% reduction in energy use and carbon dioxide emissions per tonne of production by 2014 based on 2004 values. During 2009 this target was achieved in Tarmac Building Products, therefore revised targets are being reviewed for 2011 onwards.

Practically, this is focused on improving energy efficiency at our production sites, being the highest potential influence on our footprint, however, we encourage our employees to take every measure possible to try to reduce our and their personal energy consumption. During 2010 we are widening the scope of this work to look more closely at transport and other less direct emissions.

In addition we take care to understand how our products affect sustainable construction on  a 'whole-life' approach’.  This allows us to provide detailed advice to customers on specification, design and use of our products in durable, thermally efficient and long term sustainable construction..
