Article Detail

TermoDeck are actively involved in new building projects during initial design appraisal, detailed design, the construction phase and following Client handover.  We offer assistance at the earliest stages of projects, to assess suitability for TermoDeck, and help develop efficient building design concepts.

On schemes that offer good potential for TermoDeck, we are prepared to work on a design at risk basis to help develop the design.

The following seven steps provide a guide to how TermoDeck engineers can integrate and help Client design teams deliver optimum solutions for TermoDeck buildings throughout the RIBA Work Stages.

Step 1.  RIBA Stage A/B  Appraisal and Preparing Strategic Brief.

Client and design team develop strategic brief including concepts for low energy strategies.  If required, TermoDeck can provide an initial feasibility study at this stage helping to advise building design proposals and budget costs.

Step 2.  RIBA Stage C  Outline Proposals.

Client and design team to prepare full project brief.  TermoDeck will support the early stage feasibility studies and will provide initial thermal evaluations using our own dynamic simulation software tools.

We assist the design team with structural, architectural and mechanical service concepts as well as providing cost information to arrive at the best cost option solution.

Step 3.  RIBA Stage D  Scheme design and Planning.

Stage D report compiled by the design team.  TermoDeck can assist the design team to complete final development brief and full design of the project.  Detailed comfort and energy analysis is undertaken and the optimum services strategy for the building is agreed prior to detailed design.  TermoDeck can assist in Building Regulations document submission.

Step 4.  RIBA Stage E/F  Detailed Design and Production of Information.

Full design undertaken by the Client design team.  TermoDeck will complete dynamic thermal modelling to provide confirmation of comfort and energy predictions and major plant and distribution sizes.  Description of controls operation alongside coordinated detailed layout drawings are provided to form part of the tender documentation.

Step 5.  RIBA Stage G/H  Tender Documents and Action.

TermoDeck are employed by the Principle Contractor and will therefore quote each tendering contractor.  If requested, TermoDeck can provide assistance through the tender appraisal stages to ensure all contractors fully understand the TermoDeck design principles, associated costs and savings, construction phases and post build obligations.

Step 6.  RIBA Stage J/K  Project Planning and Operations on Site.

TermoDeck will oversee the manufacture and installation of the hollowcore slabs prior to our site operations.  The slabs are modified on site to meet the TermoDeck engineers design and are subsequently cleaned and pressure tested for air tightness.  TermoDeck engineers will make regular site inspections throughout the contract duration to ensure all related aspects of the installation meet the agreed design drawings and specifications.  Particular emphasis is applied to the commissioning of the Building Management System (BMS) and associated controls operation.

Step 7.  RIBA Stage L/M  Completion and Feedback.

Remote monitoring of the building and BMS will begin for a period of up to two years following Client handover.  TermoDeck recommend that quarterly fine-tuning/performance review meetings are programmed and that the building user is fully involved.  Adjustments are made as necessary to maximise both comfort and energy consumption of the system.
