Just the ticket
A one-coat plaster from Tarmac is playing an important role in the refurbishment of many of London's Underground stations.
Whitewall One-Coat plaster is an anhydrite-based plaster, formulated to provide high resistance to damage, which applies like a backing plaster yet closes and finishes like a first class finishing plaster.
Recent projects for London Underground have included six tube stations on the Northern Line and the upgrading of Leicester Square Station. Scales Plastering of Benfleet, Essex, has used Whitewall One-Coat exclusively on these projects for main contractor YJL Construction Ltd.
John Scales explains: "We have used Whitewall One-Coat on London Underground projects for over 12 years. It is very easy to apply, it can be re-tempered for up to 2 hours and it gives a smooth, white finished surface which is extremely hard and durable."
Work on the underground stations is limited to a 4 hour night-time possession which starts immediately after the last train has run. The work involves scaffolding the area to be plastered and fixing Delta-PT mesh faced membrane to walls and tunnels. This is a damp-proofing system that also acts as a key to hold the plaster which is directly applied. Strict fire safety regulations on the Underground mean that all sections of the Delta-PT Lath have to be completely overcoated with plaster in each session of work. All scaffolding has to be removed and the site thoroughly cleaned by 5 am in advance of the first train of the day.
