Durox, Toplite, Hemelite and Topcrete products can be used to construct walls below ground (damp proof course). They can be used in sulfate soil conditions as shown in the table below and as confirmed by British Board of Agrément Certificate No. 00/3776 (Durox), 02/3896 (Toplite).
Aircrete blocks
Our aircrete blocks are resistant to the freeze / thaw conditions likely to occur below the DPC, as confirmed by tests to MOAT 12.
- Durox or Toplite Foundation blocks should be specified to construct 260-300mm solid walls below ground. They are intended to support cavity or solid walls of equivalent width above ground.
- Durox Supabloc or Toplite Standard (or any higher strength Durox or Toplite product) can be used to construct internal and external walls below ground.
- Toplite GTI is recommended for use in the construction of inner leaves only below ground.

Aggregate blocks
Hemelite and Topcrete Standard blocks are suitable to construct internal and external walls below ground. For the outer leaf of external cavity walls, or solid external walls below ground, any Topcrete product can be used, or Hemelite Standard blocks of 7.3N/mm2 strength.
However for protected locations, such as the inner leaf of a cavity wall or internal walls, Hemelite Standard 3.6N/mm2 solid or cellular blocks may be used. These products are suitable for use in sulfate soil conditions Class DS-1 to DS-3, as defined in BRE Special Digest No. 1 and shown in the table, and their use is supported by research conducted by the Concrete Block Association.
