“Sustainability is a word that’s heard a lot in business today. But what does sustainability actually mean?
For us it’s about meeting today’s needs, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. We strive for a balance between economic needs, environmental protection and social progress.
Many companies focus their sustainability efforts specifically on particular products, services or materials, but at Tarmac Building Products we take a ‘whole life’ approach. This means we work towards sustainability from three perspectives:
- As a business – by operating responsibly and ethically, using a sustainable supply chain and by managing our impacts and risks.
- As an employer – by ensuring the health and safety of our staff, treating our staff fairly and by helping them to develop their skills.
- As a product supplier – by ensuring that our customers can make their contribution to sustainability. We do this by providing products and services that are reliable, meet the right performance standards and contribute positively to sustainable construction.
Sustainability matters because it is central to our collective long-term future. Not just for the financial success of Tarmac Building Products, but also for the communities in which we work and the environment upon which we all rely. It influences how we work at every level of our business.”

How is Tarmac Building Products ensuring it meets its commitment to sustainability?
In 2009 we introduced our Sustainability Framework, which focuses on four key areas which we know are important to our customers and our business alike:
- Sustainable products – including responsible sourcing, product quality management and sustainable product performance.
- Climate change – focusing on energy and greenhouse gas management.
- Natural resources & the environment – encompassing environmental protection and efficient use of natural resources.
- People and communities – including business performance, health and safety, being a responsible and ethical business, stakeholder engagement.
